Veteran Hong Kong actress Hung Suet Nei, widely known as Suet Nay, is in mourning following the tragic death of her husband, the esteemed martial arts choreographer Tang Chia. Tang Chia, aged 88, met his demise on June 23 after a fatal fall in Jordan, Hong Kong. Reports indicate that the incident transpired around 5 pm, with a witness alerting the police about a man plummeting from a building and striking a roadside sign before landing at the junction of Austin Road and Pine Tree Hill Road. Tang Chia’s head and body were discovered in separate locations, hinting at the severity of the fall, believed to be from a nearby rooftop. Unfortunately, he passed away on the spot, leaving behind a void in the entertainment industry.
With a career deeply rooted in martial arts, Tang Chia embarked on his journey at a tender age of 15 under the tutelage of martial artist Yuen Siu Tien. His foray into films commenced at 19, and by the 1960s, he had ascended to fame as one of director Chang Cheh’s trusted action choreographers at Shaw Brothers, standing alongside Lau Kar Leung. The 1980s saw Tang Chia donning the director’s hat, helming several iconic kung fu films like Shaolin Prince (1983), Shaolin Intruders (1983), and Opium and the Kung Fu Master (1984), all revered as masterpieces in the martial arts genre. Transitioning to television, he joined TVB as a martial arts choreographer, eventually easing out of the showbiz realm in the late 1980s.
Suet Nay, on the other hand, carved a niche for herself as a popular Cantonese film starlet during the 1960s, gaining acclaim for her portrayal as the swordswoman in The Legend of Wonder Lady. Fate intertwined their lives on a film set, leading to a union in 1969. Their love story blossomed, earning them the reputation of being one of Hong Kong showbiz’s most adored couples. Post-retirement from the limelight in the late 1980s, the family relocated to Canada, only to return in the 1990s due to challenges adapting to overseas life. Suet Nay’s comeback to TVB in 1997 witnessed Tang Chia steadfastly supporting her at events and shoots, even preparing nourishing soups for her.
Tragedy struck the family when Suet Nay was diagnosed with hereditary hearing loss, rendering one ear completely deaf. Tang Chia emerged as her unwavering pillar of strength, standing by her side as her personal hearing aid. Recent years witnessed Suet Nay’s battle with pancreatic cancer, leading to prolonged hospitalization and treatment. Tang Chia’s profound love and anguish over her condition were palpable, with reports revealing his profound devastation and his expressed desire to depart alongside his beloved wife. Scheduled to finalize his will, he tragically took his own life before the appointment, leaving behind a will at home.
As the entertainment industry reels from the loss of Tang Chia, Suet Nay navigates through the grief of losing her partner and confidante. Their story, etched in love and dedication, serves as a poignant reminder of life’s fragility and the enduring bond shared by two souls intertwined by destiny.
