India’s badminton duo, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, showcased their prowess at the Singapore Badminton Open 2025 by defeating the world’s number one Malaysian pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, in a thrilling quarter-final match. Satwik and Chirag, ranked 27th globally, displayed exceptional skill and strategy to secure a 21-17, 21-15 victory in just 39 minutes.
The first game witnessed a competitive start, with Satwik and Chirag taking a lead of 11-8 at the interval and maintaining their momentum to claim the game. Despite a brief setback in the second game when they trailed 6-5, the Indian duo quickly regained control, dominating the court and sealing their spot in the semi-finals.
Having recently returned from a hiatus due to injury and illness, Satwik and Chirag’s stellar performance at the Singapore Badminton Open marked their third semi-final appearance of the season. Their previous semi-final appearances at the Malaysia Open and India Open demonstrated their consistency and determination on the badminton circuit.
Notably, Satwik and Chirag faced a defeat in the semi-finals of the India Open against Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, highlighting the competitive nature of their encounters. As the sole Indian representatives in the men’s doubles category at the Singapore Open, the duo is set to clash with the experienced Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the upcoming semi-final match.
While India’s singles campaign at the tournament concluded with the exits of HS Prannoy and PV Sindhu, Satwik and Chirag continue to carry the nation’s hopes in the men’s doubles event. The elimination of Treesa Jolly, Gayatri Gopichand, Rohan Kapoor, and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde further marked the end of India’s participation in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories at the prestigious BWF Super 750 competition.
The upcoming semi-final clash between Satwik-Chirag and Chia-Wooi Yik promises to be a riveting encounter, with both pairs aiming to secure a spot in the finals and vie for the coveted title. The resilience and skill displayed by Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty exemplify the growing prowess of Indian badminton on the international stage, setting the stage for an exciting showdown in the semi-finals.
