Western Australian chia farmers have secured a significant deal with Coles supermarkets, with more than 750 stores set to stock black and white chia seeds grown in the east Kimberley region. The Chia Co. has inked a three-year contract to supply over a million packets of chia seeds, marking a milestone for the region’s agricultural industry.
The president of The Chia Co., John Foss, emphasized the pride and passion that farmers feel when they see their produce on the shelves. This partnership not only brings commercial benefits but also showcases the dedication of local farmers in the Ord River Irrigation Area.
The journey of chia from farm to table is relatively straightforward. Harvested in the Ord Valley, the chia seeds are processed in Melbourne before being distributed through the Coles network. This direct supply chain ensures that consumers receive a product with all its nutritional benefits intact, straight from the farm.
Chia farming in Western Australia has a unique story, with the Ord River Irrigation Area offering an ideal location for cultivating this superfood. The latitude and dry season in Kununurra provide the perfect conditions for chia cultivation, making it a sought-after product in the global market.
Formerly a wheat farmer, John Foss recognized the potential of chia in Australia a decade ago and spearheaded its cultivation in the Ord region. The year-round irrigation from Lake Argyle enables consistent yield and quality, giving the region a competitive edge in supplying food manufacturers and retailers.
Despite its growing popularity globally, awareness of Ord chia among consumers remains a work in progress. Foss is optimistic about expanding export markets, with a strong foothold in countries like the US, Canada, Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The focus is not only on promoting chia but also on establishing the Ord Valley as a premier chia-growing region.
While challenges persist in raising consumer awareness, collaborations with major food companies are paving the way for greater recognition of Ord chia. The commitment of local farmers and the quality of the produce are key factors in positioning the region as a hub for premium chia production.
As the demand for chia continues to rise, the Australian chia industry is poised for further growth and recognition on the global stage. The partnership with Coles signifies a significant milestone for Western Australian chia farmers, highlighting the region’s potential as a key player in the chia seed market.
