Chia Seed Recall: FDA Issues Highest Risk Level After Salmonella Warning

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has raised the risk level for a recent chia seed recall following a salmonella warning. The FDA’s action comes after Natural Sourcing International’s Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds were found to potentially contain salmonella, posing a risk of food poisoning. This recall affects products sold under Walmart’s Great Value brand in 12 states across the United States.

The FDA issued a statement in mid-May announcing a voluntary recall of a specific lot of chia seeds due to the possible presence of salmonella. While no adverse events related to the contaminated products have been reported so far, the FDA emphasized the importance of caution and consumer safety. The affected product, Great Value Organic Black Chia Seeds in 32 oz. packaging, has now been categorized as a Class I risk by the FDA, indicating the potential for severe health consequences or even death.

Consumers are advised to check their chia seed products for the specific lot code (24095 C018) and expiration date (October 30, 2023), with a UPC number of 078742300665. The packaging can be identified by its distinctive green background, purple and white Great Value logo, and an image of a wooden spoon in front of small black seeds. These products were distributed nationwide through Walmart stores.

In the event that consumers have the affected product in their possession, they are urged to discard it immediately.
