A recent incident where a man’s food pipe got choked after ingesting dry chia seeds and drinking water has shed light on the potential risks associated with consuming chia seeds improperly. The incident, captured in a viral video, highlighted the dangers of allowing chia seeds to expand in the esophagus, leading to choking.
Chia seeds are renowned for their ability to absorb water and expand significantly when hydrated. This unique characteristic, along with their nutritional benefits such as fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and protein, has made them a popular superfood. However, when consumed in their dry form and followed by water intake, chia seeds can swell and obstruct the food pipe, as explained by Dr. Sermed Mezher.
To mitigate such risks, experts recommend pre-soaking chia seeds in water or another liquid for about 20-30 minutes before consumption. This pre-soaking process allows the seeds to expand outside the body, ensuring they are in a safer form for ingestion. Dr. Saiprasad G Lad, a Consultant Gastroenterologist, emphasized the importance of consuming chia seeds with an adequate amount of fluids to prevent discomfort and potential blockages in the digestive system.
The hazards associated with inadequate fluid intake when consuming chia seeds include digestive issues, bloating, constipation, and the formation of food bolus impaction, where a mass of food becomes lodged in the esophagus. In severe cases, this condition may necessitate emergency medical intervention, such as endoscopic removal of the obstruction or addressing the risk of aspiration, which can lead to breathing difficulties and even be life-threatening if not promptly treated.
Understanding the proper way to consume chia seeds is crucial to harnessing their health benefits while avoiding potential health risks. By being mindful of the need to hydrate chia seeds adequately before ingestion and ensuring a sufficient intake of fluids alongside their consumption, individuals can enjoy the nutritional advantages of this superfood without putting their health at risk.
