Despite the need for human-specific research, James Cowley, a co-author of the study and an expert in food product development at the University of Adelaide in Australia, points out that the digestive systems of pigs share similarities with humans, lending credibility to the initial findings.

However, Cowley emphasizes that consuming whole chia seeds, as done in popular dishes like chia seed pudding, is not detrimental. Whole chia seeds support digestive health, but their external fiber layer may hinder the release and absorption of certain nutrients. For individuals considering grinding chia seeds, Cowley recommends doing so just before consumption to prevent rancidity, as exposure to oxygen can lead to unpleasant odors and flavors.

Both whole and ground chia seeds offer nutritional value, with whole seeds being easy to digest due to their outer layer breaking down upon contact with liquids. Melissa Majumdar, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, underscores that incorporating chia seeds in either form—whole or ground—is beneficial based on personal preference and ease of use.
